Intergenerational School Learning

Our Mission:

Intergenerational Schools connect, create, and guide a multigenerational community of  lifelong learners and spirited citizens as they strive for academic excellence.

Our Educational Model:

Intergenerational Schools are unique in our approach to educating children. Nobody else in Cleveland offers our total approach, one that is based on these pillars:

Learning for a Lifetime

Learning for a Lifetime

Intergenerational Schools are multi-generational learning communities that excel at preparing students to be confident and engaged citizens in a fast-changing world. From day one, students learn to be independent and make their own good choices. Emphasis is on problem-solving, not rote memorization and conformity.

Learning From Each Other

Learning From Each Other

We learn from each other, especially through interactive experiences. Intergenerational Schools have children as young as five and very active reading and math mentors well into their 80s, with many students, teachers and mentors in between. Learning with people who are different from us benefits everyone.

Learning At Your Own Pace

Learning At Your Own Pace

Intergenerational Schools have multi-age classrooms where the emphasis is on mastering core skills at a student’s own pace. Unlike typical schools, our students never repeat a year. Our students move forward to more complex learning when they are ready to do so, not just because one school year ends and another one starts. Learning in the Intergenerational Schools model is based on individual growth, not arbitrary age or grade levels.

Learning Through "Looping"

Learning Through "Looping"

An important goal is for teachers to move forward with the same students for several years. This is known as “looping” and allows teachers, students and parents to really know each other over time. The result can be a very effective, personalized approach to individual students by teachers who know them for more than a year.

Learning in Small Classes

Learning in Small Classes

The average Intergenerational Schools class has 16 students compared with classes of 28 or more in other community schools. Smaller classes promote a focus on individuals, their learning styles and needs. Research shows students have a much better chance to excel in smaller classes.

Learning as a Positive Experience

Learning as a Positive Experience

Students at Intergenerational Schools are expected to adhere to rules and are held accountable when they fail to do that. But, our emphasis is on positive reinforcement of what is done right vs. punishment and shame for what is done wrong. We embrace what is called the Nurtured Heart approach. Our experience shows that positive praise leads to increasingly positive behaviors. Simply put, we focus on the positive, not the negative.

Learning and the Family

Learning and the Family

Daily reports are available for parents to keep up-to-date with assignments and behavior. Although we are flexible in how we schedule sit-down meetings, all parents are required to participate in meetings from time-to-time.

Our Recognition:

Intergenerational Schools have been recognized in Cleveland, in Ohio, nationally and internationally for our approach to education and the quality we bring to that. These recognitions have included:

  • Perfect passing rates for state-mandated reading tests.

  • Top tier of public elementary schools in Cleveland.

  • Strong Ohio Department of Education ratings. • School Leader of the Year Award

  • Part of a select group of 13 schools (district, charter, parochial) involved in the Cleveland Excellent Schools Project funded by the Cleveland and Gund foundations.

  • First of only three Ohio schools accepted as a member of Schools That Can, a national organization that selects and vets high-performing urban schools.

  • One of three Ohio schools to receive federal funds for dissemination of our model to other public schools in the state.

  • National Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence and also for Lifetime Achievement in Intergenerational Advocacy.
